AFRICAN OUTDOOR FURNITURE: GO ON SAFARI IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD THIS SUMMER
The bold graphics and stunning craftsmanship of Africa have been inspiring artists and designers since the 19th century. We all know that this large, diverse continent has given us some of the greatest interiors and design moments and with summer around the corner, it’s time to bring the look outdoors. Let’s look at how we can bring all the romance and earthy luxe notes of African safari-style into our backyards.
SAFARI STYLE IS VERSATILE
To recreate the safari look and feel in your outdoor area, it’s a good idea to work out which elements of African design speak to you. It’s such a versatile style. You can go all-out safari in a faithful homage featuring rattan and heavy timber outdoor dining furniture, or you can dip into different aspects of classic African décor via some outdoor-proof soft furnishings and baskets for just a hint of safari-chic.

The colours that come immediately to mind when we are thinking “Africa” are earthy tones like ochre, terracotta, earthy browns, deep gold, khaki and burnt orange. If your idea of bliss is a safari-inspired outdoor space, stick closely to these hues in your décor items, and pair them with furniture featuring natural materials such as rattan, linen, woven furniture and timber. For a safari staple, think about introducing one of Africa’s most enduring design exports, the iconic Butterfly Chair.
KEY MOMENTS IN OUTDOOR DÉCOR TO CONSIDER
It’s not all about earthy tones though. Vibrant shades of blue and green, as well as pink and purple reference the landscape and the brightly coloured textiles of West Africa. Think cushions, outdoor rugs and, if your outdoor space is protected from the elements and you love the idea of a glam interpretation of African style, consider introducing dynamic artwork or Cameroonian juju hats paired with some gorgeous rugs in natural fibres and hues. Jute rugs are synonymous with the safari look but will only work in an undercover outdoor area. The inclusion of lush vegetation is non-negotiable for any safari inspired space.
OUT OF AFRICA: LOUNGE STYLE
Is it even a safari themed area if you can’t lounge? We think not. A daybed, recliners, liberal use of white linen, and a drinks caddy surrounded by lush green foliage in baskets can be all you need to create the Out of Africa space of dreams.
