How To Choose The Perfect Leather Sofa

There’s something sensual and luxurious about sinking into a leather sofa. Whether it's a rustic vintage piece that evokes the pioneering character of yesteryear, or a sleek modern design that oozes European style and sophistication, there’s no denying their enduring appeal. Not only are leather sofas elegant statement items for any home, they are also incredibly durable—when treated right, they will last for years and can be passed down from generation to generation.

Given the longevity of a leather sofa, it’s important to do your research before investing. There are a plethora of options out there on the market, so here are four important questions to consider when you’re on the hunt for your perfect leather sofa.

Genuine leather is split into two main types during the tanning process: the top grain and the bottom split. Always choose a leather sofa constructed from grain leather as they tend to be much stronger compared to split leather, which is more fragile, unstable and liable to stretch. It has no grain and is not suitable for furniture. Opt for full grain leather, corrected leather, or semi-corrected grain leather, which fall under the category of genuine top grain leather.

If you’re not sure of the authenticity of the leather, look for tiny imperfections—real leather will never be smooth. The natural grain will contain grooves and unevenness, signalling it is of genuine quality.

Leather sofas have a timeless appeal that never goes out of style; however, there are a number of different styles and configurations you can choose from to suit your lifestyle and existing décor.

Right now, the classic Chesterfield is having its day in the sun—with its time-honoured lines it gives an old-world, rustic charm to a living room, particularly when paired with plush vintage-style rugs, antique decor and dark wooden shelving or bookcases.

If your home has more of a contemporary aesthetic, you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to leather sofas. The modern-day leather sofa is low slung, with sleek lines and a modular design so you can play with shapes and angles.

If you love leather but don’t want to go all in with a statement sofa, you can also add texture to your rooms with a fabulous leather accent chair or a leather ottoman that can double as a coffee table or a handy storage piece.

Your leather sofa will naturally be a major focal point of any room, so colour choice is vital. If you would like your piece to harmonise with the palette of your existing style and décor, go for natural leather pigments, or creams, tans, or browns. These earthy tones generally work well in most settings.

Black or charcoal coloured leather is also a strong option to add a little drama while still working well with a variety of existing colour palettes and overarching styles.

For those with modern homes wanting to make a bold statement, then white leather certainly brings the glamour! It’s striking, sophisticated and can be dressed up or down with your choice of cushions and throws.

Even more daring? Try an accent chair in a bright block colour like tangerine or yellow to transport you straight back to the mod-style of the 50s and 60s!

As the saying goes, leather wears in, not out. It’s durable, easy to clean (perfect for homes with pets and kids!) and provided you take care of it, it will last you for years into the future.

It’s important to read the care instructions of your sofa and apply a manufacturer-recommended leather conditioner every four to six months, and wipe any spills immediately with a damp cloth. Don’t use soaps, abrasive cleaners, waxes, oils or excessive water.

Additionally, remember that placing a leather sofa close to a heat source like a fireplace is not recommended, and some leathers also fade in excessive direct sunlight so take these things into consideration when deciding where to position your piece.

The bottom line? A quality leather sofa will outlive multiple fabric ones—pick a colour and style that you love that also works for your lifestyle, and your family will bask into the lived-in luxury of a leather sofa for generations to come.
