The Essential Coffee Table Guide

No living room is complete without a coffee table. These essential, hardworking pieces of furniture usually combine several purposes. For instance, a coffee table can serve to be primarily decorative, a statement piece that displays objects d‘art.

On the other hand, a coffee table can also combine the function of storage, an additional space to use when entertaining or a place for children to play or enjoy a snack. Regardless of the function, a well-chosen coffee table can also complete the overall look of any living space.

The size and height of your coffee table is as important as the style and look you choose. For a coffee table to be effective, it especially needs to fit a certain height criteria. The height of a coffee table should be no lower than 2.5 cm – 5cm from the seat of your couch. Most coffee tables are between 40cm and 46cm tall. These heights tend to work with the standard heights of most sofas. However if your sofa is taller, it would require approximately 50cm of coffee table height to coordinate.

There are numerous reasons why you would want to get the size and height of your coffee table right. A too high coffee table, or a too large coffee table can dominate a space and be awkward to use. Whereby, a too low coffee table can be difficult to practically and safely set drinks and food down, while a slightly taller coffee table will function well if you entertain a lot.

Where to start? There’s obviously a huge range of styles and shapes when it comes to coffee tables. Distinct from a side table, or an occasional table, the coffee table by nature is connected to your sofa and any surrounding seating. Here, I would suggest that you let the style of your seating and the general décor of your home be your guide to your choice of coffee table style.

The chosen material of your coffee table will set the tone. For instance, if your living room is formal, choose a table that is comprised of classical materials, such as marble and brass. If your personal style leans towards contemporary, a glass table, or one made of a modern equivalent material would work ideally.

If your taste runs more to boho and vintage, the options are numerous. From recycled to up-cycled tables, to hand crafted tables made of natural materials such as wood. These would all be complimentary choices for a more relaxed living space.
