The Perfect Valentine's Day at Home
You don’t need to leave home to celebrate Valentine’s Day. In fact, sometimes sharing time together at home allows for a more intimate and romantic experience.
So how can you transform an evening at home into a special romantic occasion? There are actually plenty of tips that are easy to implement, starting with how you style your space.
ROMANCE AT HOME
Setting the tone at home starts with a clean and cleared space. Fresh and fragrant flowers are wonderful, as they will add beautiful scents and colour to your home.
Lighting is also important, so where possible ensure your lighting is set at maximum ‘flattering’. Candles on the table are ideal, while adding a fragrant candle elsewhere in the home, such as the entryway or in the bedroom, will also add to the ambience.
SET A ROMANTIC TABLE
SAY CHEERS TO SAINT VALENTINES DAY
To toast to the saint of romance, choose a cocktail that you and your partner both enjoy. There are some great new fashionable cocktails that incorporate gin and elderflower that are especially delicious.
To accompany dinner, there is no other liquid that quite says ‘I love you’ like Champagne – that is, the real bubbles that hail from France, Champagne.
TAKE IT OUTSIDE
Enjoy the warm weather and take your Valentine's meal to the wonderful outdoors. Where be it at the beach, a grassy field or even your own back garden. Eating and drinking al fresco is truly romantic, under the stars and enjoying nature. Keep it simple, a picnic basket and bottle of wine will do the trick. Sit on some outdoor ottomans, a throw on the grass or an outdoor furniture setting with candles.
ROMANTIC MENU IDEAS
I would suggest you put some thought and preparation in advance, regardless of your menu choices, as this will ensure you are more relaxed and able to spend more time with your loved one.
Starters can easily be prepared in advance and can be as simple as a platter of oysters – the famous aphrodisiac from the sea! But oysters aren’t for everyone, so even a delicious bruschetta is always a popular starter.
A NIGHT OF INDULGENCE
What do we recommend for the main attraction (that is, after you)?
There are always the classic, indulgent dishes, such a gorgeous French Coq au Vin, a Lobster or Beef Wellington, or a gourmet Seafood Paella for two.
For vegans or vegetarians, there’s no shortage of options. A tasty red Wine Risotto with Peas would please most vegetarians, while a delicious vegan lasagne or a colourful vegan grazing plate should hit the sweet spot for your vegan lover.
However, if cooking is not your forte - don’t panic. Stick to something you know, or try to recreate something simple that has significance for you and your partner. As we mentioned earlier, at home dinners are more about the effort you put in and the intimacy created rather than showing off.
