Get Your Outdoor Furniture Summer Ready

With Summer fast approaching its time to dust off that bbq and clean up that outdoor furniture so that you can make the most of those oh so magic long summer days and nights. There really is nothing better than entertaining outdoors on your deck, verandah, or in your garden during the warmer months however the cooler seasons tend to play havoc with outdoor furnishings and settings. What better way to get summer-ready than to give your outdoor furniture a good seasonal clean that will ensure it is in top shape for you to rest, relax, and entertain within your great outdoors. Not sure how to clean and care for your outdoor furnishing? We've got an easy how-to guide that is sure to see your hammock bound in no time at all.

It is best to give outdoor cushions a wipe over and surface clean once a month due to the amount of air moisture they are exposed too. Most modern styles specifically designed for outdoor use are made of moisture-resistant fabrics that do make them easier to care for and many can be unzipped and popped straight into the wash! For those that need a wipe over it is best to use this method: Combine 1litre warm water, 1 teaspoon dishwashing liquid, and 1 tablespoon borax in a bucket. Dip a soft cloth in the solution, then use it to scrub the cushions on all sides. Let the solution soak in for 15 minutes. Rinse lightly with a damp cloth. Stand each cushion on an edge in the sun until dry on all sides.

There are so many gorgeous outdoor umbrellas on the market currently and they are the perfect solution to adding shade and some serious style to your outdoor table or seating nook. For a cloth or canvas-based umbrella, this is the best cleaning method to ensure it lasts you for many summers to come: Hose down the umbrella. Rub a wet soft-bristle brush across a bar of laundry soap. Run it over the open canopy, working from bottom to top. Leave the umbrella up and in full sun to dry off, do not fold it up until it is 100% dry. In between cleanings, wipe off bird droppings as soon as you spot them; the high acid content damages the fabric.

These three are the materials de jour of the outdoor furniture world currently and are not only incredibly durable for outdoor use but fabulously chic and on-trend also! Outdoor furnishings in these materials do require some TLC to ensure they last the distance. It is best to clean each change of seasons using this easy method: Use the vacuum’s crevice attachment to dislodge leaves and bugs from the cracks, a paintbrush or soft dustpan brush also works well, too! Next, place water in a bowl and add a few drops of dish liquid. Using a microfibre cloth dipped in the liquid wipe all furniture surfaces over but avoid overwetting as this can cause these natural materials to swell and crack. Using a clean damp cloth, wipe over the furniture again and leave to dry in the sun. For added protection, when the furniture is completely dry you can apply a thin coat of lacquer once a year.

Wood is the staple material of outdoor furniture due to its robust and durable nature, its organic origins also mean it looks right at home in an outdoor setting. Wood furniture does require thorough maintenance at least once a year to keep it in peak condition. Follow this method for quick and easy results: Light cleaning of wooden outdoor furniture is best done with a cloth dipped in a solution of mild soapy water. Try: 1litre water to 4 drops dishwashing liquid, wring the cloth out well before using in the furniture. For deeper cleaning or in the instance of tougher stains or mould, you can scrub with a soft brush and a mix of water and bleach. Scrub in the direction of the wood grain. Remove challenging stains by lightly sanding (again, with the direction of the grain) Once every few seasons it is best to re-stain or oil your outdoor furniture so that it really does last you a lifetime.

This heavy, durable material is a firm favourite of many for use in outdoor furniture and is a long-lasting high-quality option. It does still require a little maintenance and cleaning to help prevent rust and retain durability. The best way to clean wrought iron outdoor furniture is as follows: Combine 3 drops of household detergent with 1 litre of water and using a non-fibrous cloth wipe the surface over thoroughly. For smaller cracks and crevices use a soft brush. Wipe down the furniture again using a clean damp sponge making sure to remove all cleaning solution residue. With a dry, lint-free towel wipe over your wrought iron furniture and leave it to dry in the sunshine. A rust protective spray can be used to stop corrosion.
