With the Spring sunshine beginning to kiss our backs again and the early morning light returning to warm our homes, it seems that this month offers the perfect opportunity to banish those winter blues and rejuvenate, refresh and revamp your home and spirit! There is no better way to do this than with a good spring clean. If you're like me and the idea of spring cleaning seems just a bit too daunting then read on and we will share with you our tips on all things cleaning that will have your counters sparkling, your windows washed and your home dust free in no time with, no fuss at all.
START WITH DE-CLUTTERING
De-cluttering is the very first job you will need to tackle. This allows you to clear your space and will make it easier for you to actually see what needs to be cleaned and organised. Make yourself three large boxes labelled with “KEEP” “STORE” and “THROW” work through each room systematically with these boxes and then stow your keep belongings in their appropriate homes, find storage solutions for items you wish to store and then take a trip to the local op shop/tip with all those items you no longer need. You will be amazed at how much of a difference this de-cluttering makes to your home!!
MAKE A CLEANING KIT
A vital step in starting and keeping your home or apartment clean is buying the right supplies and tools. Assemble your kit and stow it all in a handy to access bucket or container. If you are eco conscious there are many green products available on the market or you can even make your own.
YOU WILL NEED:
ALL PURPOSE CLEANER
GLASS CLEANER BATHROOM AND TOILET CLEANER
CARPET AND UPHOLSTERY SPOT CLEANER
SPONGES AND SCRUBBING BRUSH
FURNITURE POLISH (WAXED BASED IS PREFERABLE)
GO ROOM BY ROOM
Trying to do everything at once is a common spring cleaning mistake, and one that will set you back and waste your time! Tackling one room at a time with a dedicated list and realistic time frame allocations will help to keep you focused and will ensure that you get to everywhere that you need to clean in your home. It is important to remember that Rome wasn't built in a day, so it's okay to spread your spring clean out over a few days or even a week, so long as you stick to your list and complete tasks by their dedicated day/time so that you do stay on track and your spring clean doesn't turn into a summer clean!
BUY A PROPER VACUM
Nothing says proud homeowner like a slimline, bagless, ultra modern vacuum cleaner and believe me you will have no greater friend! A good quality vacuum is life changing and will ensure that your home looks and stays cleaner for longer. Ideally, invest in a bagless model and one that has over 200 air watts for optimum suction. You should aim to clean your vacuum out every month to ensure that it maintains high function capacity. Never rush when vacuuming at a slower vacuum pace will result in the removal of up to 85% more dust and allergens. Don't forget to vacuum your skirtings and even reach the nozzle towards the ceilings every now and then to get rid of any spider webs or dust that may linger there. Vacuums are ideal for cleaning your mattress and as rule of thumb, you should run your vacuum over your mattress top twice a month to remove all the nasties that gather on it.
CLEAN THOSE FORGOTTEN SPACES
There are a million pesky little spots that regular vacuuming and dusting just don't seem to cover, now's the time to get to them! Think window tracks, doors and their handles, light switches and covers, behind the toilet crevices, kitchen drawers, under the couch cushions, soap dishes, bathroom cabinets, toothbrush holders, wardrobe and bookcase
shelves and oh so many more! When you make your list for essential spring cleaning in each room it is a good idea to take a wander into that room to double check you are not missing any of these often overlooked spaces.
ADDRESS YOUR FRIDGE
As diligent as you can be in cleaning out your fridge and freezer you are always bound to come across a jar or five of condiments or containers of forgotten leftovers that are out of date or mouldy….we all have them, trust me! A great way to tackle spring cleaning your fridge is to remove everything from the fridge and freezer, checking expiration dates and quality before and either tossing them or putting them aside as you go. Before putting everything back in your fridge and freezer, wipe the inside and the compartments of the fridge and freezer over with hot, soapy water, do the same with all your jars and bottles that are heading back into the fridge, wiping over bases and lids. Once everything is ready to go back in, organise the contents effectively: the door - the least cold area- should hold condiments; the bottom drawers- with higher humidity- should hold veggies and fruits; the middle and top shelf - the coldest- are best for perishable items.
