How To Choose The Right Cushions This Spring
Everybody loves cushions. Even the most committed minimalist will accessorise with some cushions. Not only will cushions dial-up the comfort factor on your sofa, but some well-chosen cushions will really bring a room to life. Cushions instantly bring a pop of colour, a range of textures and style moment to your sofa, making it even more inviting for a spot of lounging with a book or Netflix. It’s also one of the easiest purchases because, real talk, who has ever regretted the purchase of cushions? (Spoiler alert: no one).
If you’re looking to lighten up your lounge space for Spring, cushions are a shortcut to introducing some fresh colour to signal the warmer weather. But with so many cushions to choose from, how do you choose the right cushions for your space? While there are no real rules, as such, there are definitely some guidelines that will have you selecting and styling cushions like a pro. Let’s investigate.
1. Choose your colour palette
As with any décor decision, the first step is to identify your colour palette. The trick is to make sure your cushions are going to work with everything else you have already got going on in the space. So draw on the accent colours you want to highlight. Look around at your rugs, soft furnishings and artworks, and then pull a few colours out that will complement your large foundation pieces of furniture. This way your room will look cohesive, stylish and pulled together. Perfect.
2. Select the right shape and size
Picking the right mix of shapes is the key to having a room with visual depth and interest. Put a couple of larger size cushions, 55cm x 55cm size cushions are ideal here, at the back of your sofa. Then layer the smaller ones, 45cm x45cm size works well, in front of these. Throw in a 30cm x 50cm rectangle cushion to balance the mix and you are well on your way to achieving cushion styling glory.
3. Consider introducing a round cushion
Round cushions are the latest design crush for décor aficionados. Squares, rectangles and circles are a dream combination, as adding some round edges creates contrast, interest and adds a touch of whimsy. It’s also another way of adding balance to a space and you could easily change the two smaller cushions for a couple of round ones. Or simply just add a round cushion into the mix for bonus interior design points.

4. Consider a mix of patterns
Mixing patterns is not just for the brave. If you follow these guidelines it’s actually much easier than you think. The key is to make sure the size and scale of the patterns are not competing. One big, one small and one solid is a good rule of thumb. Ideally, the patterns need to be different enough that you can differentiate between them. A good, if slightly strange, tip is to ‘blur’ your eyes by almost closing them and then stare at the two patterns. If you can tell the difference then you are on the right track.
5. Decide how many cushions you need
When deciding how many cushions you will need, let abundance and luxury be your guide. If you have a formal lounge space with a strong traditional feel, an even number of cushions will create symmetry and give your room an ultra-chic look. In contrast, an odd number of pillows will suit modern, eclectic, boho and less formal living spaces.

6. Play with texture
Texture is where all the best, interesting, design magic happens. For cushions, this means mixing up the texture, especially if you are opting for solid colours. Three linen cushions won’t make the impact you’re looking for, but a combination of linen, velvet, chunky wool, fringed and cotton are going add loads of depth and visual interest, while also being safe and timeless.
7. Style your cushions like a pro
The only thing left is to experiment with styling until you have found a combination that really makes your room sing. Don’t be afraid to try out different combinations in store, either. We’ve all seen people piling up cushions to make sure they work together before bringing them home. Layer them up, or make them look oh-so-casually thrown together. Then sit back, relax and enjoy all the luxe feels of your new cushions.
