Places like Long Island, Martha's Vineyard and the Hampton's are the settings for some of America's most beautiful homes. Their physical coastal locations are as much the impetus for specific elements contained within their interiors as they are for a state of mind. Beach house decor does not depend on living by the ocean or a lake, as it represents an attitude to life that relies on relaxed, inviting and comfortable interiors. It is about respecting the integrity of the landscape, whether modern or traditional and incorporating local light and the colour palette of ocean and fields.
Nature always remains the star attraction, and colours should reflect the soothing neutrals of sand, sun bleached shades of ocean blue, and coral pink, and the golden accents of seashells. The soft greys of driftwood and coastal plants also helps create a scheme, white reigns supreme, providing that perfect foil for china-blue or sage green accessories.
To achieve a classic Hampton's designs avoid "too formal, too cluttered, too rigid". Furniture and accessories should have casual elegance and look comfortable and relaxed. Fussy ornamentation has no place in here, instead, pieces should be simple with generous upholstery, using textured cotton or linen. Furniture styles vary, including French Provincial pieces in light timber stains or painted finishes as well as the natural look of vintage rattans in soft beige and grey. European shapes and antiques feature in statement furniture such as chairs and occasional tables, but their styling should not have a pretentious Park Avenue formality-keep the emphasis on week-end relaxation. Large Nickel lanterns, all white shell displays, oversized casual lamps, with turned driftwood or iron bases, coir rugs and blue and white ginger jars, are the types of accessories that will help create a calm and quietly appealing personal haven.
