You know that magical feeling you get when you meet someone whose passion, creativity, innate sense of style and enthusiasm captures you from your head to your toes? Well, that person is most definitely Sarah Glover. She is not only a chef but an adventurer, surfer, stylistic dynamite and absolutely one of the most divine and genuine woman you will ever come across. Not to mention the fact that the girl CAN COOK!!! Having recently traipsed throughout Australia shooting her first cookbook WILD a book overflowing with her authentic Aussie spirit we thought it would be the perfect time to share her inspiring work.
TELL US ABOUT SARAH GLOVER?
I’m a chef, pastry chef, and adventurer at heart. I never thought it was possible to put the two together and then I realised there wasn’t any chef police man telling me I couldn’t so I just opened the door and stepped out. I have been cooking for 16 years professionally now. I grew up on a cold island of Tasmania. It's an island full of endless produce and boundless opportunities. I moved to Bondi Beach 9 years ago opening a cookie store called Bondi Bikkies. I then took myself and my cookies to NYC where I opened a restaurant. I have recently returned to Australia to fulfil a life long passion of writing a cook book which brings me to now with WILD in my hands.
WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND AND HOW DID YOU GET INTO COOKING AND ADVENTURING?
I grew up on an island and there wasn’t a lot to do so we just made our fun by building a cubby house, going diving for fish or surfing. Anything we could do to get out of school work was our goal as kids. I began cooking from a young age and discovered a pretty huge passion. I guess, from this I just put the two (the food + the adventure) together and created my thing.
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY INVOLVE?
Most days I go for a surf, do some emails, pack bags and head out on some crazy adventure. This could mean making Bondi Bikkies, taking photos with Luisa (the ever talented Luisa Brimble) or getting ready to cater an event. My days vary, but for that I am thankful as I get bored easily and like running my own schedule.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE THINGS THAT INSPIRE YOU IN THE WORK THAT YOU DO?
I am constantly inspired by produce and the locations around me. I guess I tend to really just work with what I have, and dream up something crazy.
WHAT IS YOUR FOOD AND LIFE PHILOSOPHY?
Keep it simple and fresh, honour the produce and respect the land.
WHAT PLATE OF FOOD WOULD YOU TAKE TO A POTLUCK DINNER PARTY?
Hahaha, I would probably take my portable bbq, light it up and cook a hung chicken over the smoke.
HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR SPARE TIME?
I don't find myself with a lot of spare time these days, but if and when I do I'm straight down to the beach for a surf and to get my peace restored in the fresh air.
WHAT IS YOUR IDEAL ENVIRONMENT TO CREATE IN?
Ideal, ekkkkk, thats opening a can of worms!! Probably a cast away island full of produce and food for me to hunt down, trees for me to build houses in and plenty of wood to scavenge to rig up a fire or two for a feast. Basically a swiss family Robinson type scenario.
WHAT'S NEXT FOR SARAH GLOVER?
Oh I would love to do a TV show, maybe some pop up dinners based around a camp fire… really the ideas are endless.
